DESCRIPTION:The Lady Day Big Band ready to awe South African audiences with debut album launch this February \nSouth Africa’s first all-women professional big band is set to launch their debut album at Cape Town’s Star Theatre next month. \nThe Lady Day Big Band (LDBB) was founded in 2018 as a legacy project aimed at showcasing the talents of professional female musicians while fostering new talent. \nAfter perfecting their sound\, they now invite audiences to join them and their special guests as they celebrate the release of their debut album\, “Livus’umoya” on Friday 23 February 2024.\n \nGuests to their launch will be able to watch them live up to the legacy of the illustrious Billy “Lady Day” Holiday\, one of the most unforgettable pioneers of 20th century Jazz. \n“It is an exciting time to spearhead a female-led project like this\, in an industry and genre that is still male-dominated. Over the last six years we have seen how this initiative has raised the visibility of women musicians\, and our members have benefited from this greatly. Many of our players have been booked to play in all kinds of projects and have grown in skill and confidence as a direct result of their involvement and performances with the band\,” says Amanda Tiffin\, one of the founding members. \nTiffin spearheads the band with fellow musos and creators of the group: Lana Crowster and Kelly Bell. \nThe band incorporates contemporary styles with traditional big band sounds\, to give audiences an explosive experience of exciting big band music.\n \n“Having my own big band had always been a dream to me\, and after many years in the industry it was important to me to create a space\, not only where women would feel physically safe but also where they felt comfortable to play their instrument\, and explore their musicality and creativity through composition and arrangement\, \n“Recording an album went hand-in-hand with that purpose. I knew it would create an opportunity for some of our players to record in a professional studio for the first time in their careers\, for others\, it would give the opportunity to showcase their songwriting\, composition and arrangement skills. Through the process of creating the album\, we have all cultivated confidence in our skills as musicians\,” said Crowster\, who is currently residing in New York City. \n“Learning\, growing and evolving is in our credo\, and the album was a perfect vehicle to tick all those boxes. In addition\, our incredible performances since our debut in 2018 has always left our audiences wanting more\, and now they’ll be able to enjoy our music wherever they are in the world\,” she added \nTiffin describes the launch album as a collection of all South African music\, across a few genres\, but sitting mainly in the South African Jazz arena. \n“We chose to feature an all-South African repertoire as we are passionate about showcasing South African works. Six out of the nine compositions have been penned by members of the LDBB\, and the other three tracks are big band re-imaginings of some South African classics.” \nThe album features a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks\, with band leader and founder\, Lana Crowster lending her voice to a number of pieces\, including a heart-wrenching performance of Karen Zoid and Francois Van Cokes’ “Toe Vind Ek Jou”. \nThe album also features incredible collaborations. \n“Gloria Bosman was kind enough to lend us her powerhouse vocal skills while she was living and studying in Cape Town in 2021\, on an epic rendition of Busi Mhlongo’s Yehlisan’umoya. This was sadly to be one of her last studio recordings. We will forever be humbled and grateful that we got to include her on our album\,” said Tiffin. \nThe band hopes to convey encouraging and uplifting messages through their album. \n“Ayo Ayo (lyrics by Phathiswa Magangane) conveys an uplifting message of hope and encouragement\, to remain open hearted\, and to embrace the future. We used a lyric from this song as the title for our album\, as it embodies the overall theme and ethos of the LDBB. To awaken the spirit\,” said Tiffin. \n“Elegy for the Forgotten Child was written as a response to the shocking epidemic of child murders that happened and sadly continues to happen in the Western Cape. \n“It is a lament for the children whose names appear in the press for a fleeting moment\, a news cycle\, and are then forgotten\, while the violence continues\, often unacknowledged. It Is a call to remember their names. The song is written using the voices of three women\, three mothers who have each lost a child\, and the lyrics are written in Afrikaans\, English by Quanita Adams and Xhosa by Nomfundo Xaluva-Dyantyis\,” said Tiffin. \n“Globally\, African creativity is trending and will continue to do so\, as the world’s attention brings us into centre focus. I want LDBB to be represented on global stages at festivals and conferences as well as collaborate with women musicians in other territories\,” said Crowster. \n“In addition\, we will be working towards creating visibility on the continent too – hosting free workshops for young musicians all over the continent\, the same way we have been doing in Cape Town. It has been proven that representation matters. DESCRIPTION:POSTPONED TILL FURTHER NOTICE:\nIt’s a triple-threat celebration for singer-songwriter Berenike Trytsman\, better known as Berry\, when she celebrates Heritage Month\, her new single and the city of Cape Town on September 9. \nThe concert will take place in The Wave Theatre Cafe\, 44 Long Street\, Cape Town. \n“Cape Town is my home\, my heart belongs to Cape Town and performing here gives me a sense of pride that is hard to match. Seeing the faces of my fellow Capetonians brings me absolute joy\, she said. \n“I am looking forward to finally having a show that will express me for who I am and deliver fantastic music with my band\,” said Berry who started music lessons at the age of eleven and gained notoriety in 2021 when she won Idols South Africa and was subsequently signed to the record label Kalawa Jazmee \nBerry says that music has been an integral part of her life from before she could even walk\, born into a musical family with both her parents being former professional opera singers she won her first music competition at the age of fourteen. \nHer latest song\, Never Say Die\, is said to be a true expression of\, “me just being who I am and singing because it’s what I love to do”. \n“This track is based on my experience while I was away at Idols from my family for four months. It was one of the hardest times in my life. It’s an anthem to never give up no matter how hard this time in your life is\,” she said. \nThe song was produced by Music Blimp Productions\, the music studio owned by her husband Renier Trytsman. \n“He knows me better than I know myself\, and he wrote the song. He’s also my drummer. My input came along when I had to help select the lyrics I wanted in the song and with his beautiful music I was able to add the vocal direction I wanted for the song\,” she said. \nThe singer says she is working to bring even more music before the end of 2023\, hinting at both an album and a tour. \n“This show will be a journey of music from my past\, present and future. It will showcase the genre and style that I enjoy singing and it will be the first time I can show my heart to my amazing followers. At the age of twenty\, Berry auditioned for the first time on Idols South Africa\, season 6. She went through to the top 30\, where her journey ended. Berry went on to be a vocal coach in the following years\, at which time she met her husband and biggest supporter who co-writes original songs with her.\nAfter spending almost five years trying to break into the mainstream music market\, Berry realized that 2021 was the last year to enter Idols South Africa\, due to the cutoff age being 30. Berry sent in her audition tape and the rest is Idols South Africa history. After winning Idols\, Berry was signed to the record label Kalawa Jazmee.\nBerry then released her debut single\, Ungowami\, a mid-tempo ballad which showcases her versatility in vernac. She also then released her EP\, Unspoken Words\, which includes six tracks. Three of these tracks were written and produced by her husband.\nBerry has since performed at various festivals and events since winning Idols such as K-Day\, An Ode to Women\, It’s a Love Thing\, Music Exchange\, Unity on the Square\, Wonder Woman\, and Moonstruck. She has also had various interviews on television shows such as Tussen Ons\, Koortjies\, Expresso\, Hectic Nine-9\, and Roer. As well as being featured on both print and radio such as Kfm\, Smile FM\, Cape Talk\, Goodhope FM\, Sunday Times\, Daily Voice and many more.\nShe released a collaboration with DJ Cosher in February 2023 for his song called House of the Rising Sun is a follow-up on his Sound of Silence success. This release was accompanied by a music video. SUMMARY:YOUTH CLASSICAL CONCERT
DESCRIPTION:Ten extraordinarily talented classical music instrumentalists\, singers and a saxophone quartet will showcase their prowess at this year’s 52nd Youth Classical Concert. On stage on Saturday 2 September 2023\, in the Artscape Theatre at 19.00 this prestigious annual event\, offers accomplished young musicians the opportunity of playing with a symphony orchestra on a professional concert stage. \nRanging from as young as 15 years of age to 21\, they will perform works by Chaminade\, Saint-Saëns\, Vivaldi\, Prokofiev\, Crusell\, Verdi\, Ravel and Bill Holcombe. Much of the biggest repertoire and most exciting to listen to and perform is in the concerto field (instrument with orchestra) and opera field (voice and orchestra). The appeal of the works presented\, as well as good variety in the overall programme content\, played an important part in the final selection of these musicians. \nThe successful musicians who auditioned this year for the opportunity to perform with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) include Esihle Mthethwa (18) on Flute\, Kyrah Adams (17) Marimba\, Daniel Hutton (18) Clarinet\, Bayanda Mthetho (20) and Christof Joubert(21) on Piano. Gilah Kellner (19) and Emma Steenkamp (16) play the violin\, Vocalists are Tenor Jason September (21)\, Sopranos Chloe Loggenberg (19)and Sasha Damons (21). TheHugo Lambrechts Saxophone Quartet members are – Keon Müller (19) on Soprano Saxophone\, James Cilliers (16) on alto\, Kian Goliath (15) on tenor and Michael de Goede (17) on baritone. \nThe emphasis of the Concert\, produced by Artscape and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO)is a celebration of young musical talent and not a competition. \nJacobus de Jager will be conducting the orchestra and in preparation for the concert\, the musicians will receive individual\, comprehensive sessions with him and the CPO. In 2017 Kobus was a soloist on piano at the 46th annual event and is the most recent winner of the South African Conductors’ Competition. He was one of the eight semi-finalists of the 2023 Herbert von Karajan Young Conductor’s Award in Salzburg and resident conductor of the Stellenbosch University Symphony Orchestra in 2021 and 2022. He has conducted ensembles for the COPO as well as for other orchestras in South Africa and continues his conducting studies in September. \nThe musicians are currently studying at the SA College of Music at the University of Cape Town\, Stellenbosch University\, Hugo Lambrechts Music Centre and with distinguished music teachers – Liam Burden\, Arisa Voges\, Dr Liesl Stoltz\, Alex Laing\, Prof Luis Magalhaes and Prof Nina Schumann. \nDuration of the Concert is 90 minutes including a 30-minute interval.
