DESCRIPTION:Not even the sweltering heat could put a damper on this year’s Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade on Tuesday\, January 2\, which saw thousands of spectators take to the streets to celebrate the New Year. \nAn estimated 100\,000 onlookers filled the streets to witness the iconic annual Capetonian festival\, which has had young and old in awe for decades. \n“We did have some minor incidents with people in the crowd affected by the heat\, but those issues were dealt with. Our medical team has been superb in making sure everyone was taken care of on a day when the temperatures reached over 30 degrees\,” said Riyaad Peters\, Operations Director for Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association (KKKA). \nThe excitement around the event started way before kick-off\, not only from the 26 troupes who took part\, but also from supporters who were camped out on New Year’s Day to make sure they got a good spot along the route. \nWith roughly 15\, 000 to 20\, 000 minstrels participating in Africa’s largest cultural festival\, the streets were a buzz with Ghoema music\, choreographed marches\, and colourful costumes.\n \n“Today was a very successful day\, not only for the hosts and the sponsors but also for Cape Town and South Africa as a whole. We saw the Hollywoodbets Purple Mile opposite the City Hall – the new grandstand erected for the event – packed\,” said Peters. \nThe city centre’s streets between Rose Street in Bo Kaap and Hanover Street in District Six were a colourful spectacle\, as minstrel troupes from all over Cape Town continued the long-standing custom that has been observed in the region for more than 115 years. \n“As soon as Deputy Mayor Eddie Andrews officially opened the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade\, the streets came alive with satin\, sequins and Ghoema music\,” said Peters. \nThe festivities kicked off promptly at 13:15 and the last troupe ended their parade just before the cut-off time. \nAccording to KKKA director Muneeb Gambeno\, having the event start and end exactly on schedule without any hiccups\, was a first for the event but certainly not the last. \nDeputy Mayor Eddie Andrews said: “As the city we are diverse\, and this event helps us to celebrate our uniqueness and our diversity. We have people here from all walks of life. The social cohesion aspects and the economic benefit as well\, I think it’s a marriage made perfect in Cape Town on Tweede Nuwe Jaar.” \nIt was a double celebration for the Minstrel fraternity as the Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade 2024 event coincides with the 20th anniversary of the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association. \nThe troupes paraded straight down Darling Street with onlookers in the Hollywoodbets Purple Mile\, opposite the City Hall having the “best seats in the house”. \nFour new grandstands were erected\, and spectators could gain access to the prime viewing area on a first come first served basis. \nTroupes participating were from both the Cape District Minstrel Board as well as the organising association the KKKA. The running order for the day was Original District Six Hanover Minstrels; West London All-Stars; TV Stars\, Pennsylvanians; Butlers Youth Development; Tygerberg Youth; Young Ones Youth Development; Exquisite Golden Gate; Mannenberg Superstars; Cape Town Hawkers; Fabulous Woodstock Starlites; Ravenmead Community; Spes Bona; Lavender Superstars; Valhalla Community Entertainers; Fabulous Seawind Entertainers; Posh Vibrant Youth Development; Playaz Inc. Carnival Boys; Wesbank Youth Entertainer; Delft Community Entertainers; The Original Wild Apaches; Juvie Boy Entertainers; Ashwin Willemse Orient and Young Wild Commanches with some troupes being almost 2000 members strong.\n\n \nFestivities for this year’s event carried on until after 21:00\, as it marked a successful day for all spectators\, organizers and sponsors. \n“The Hollywoodbets Cape Town Street Parade was a spectacular showcase\, and the unwavering organisational commitment from all participants ensured the event was a resounding success. Troupes from Section 1 will compete for top honours on January 6 and 20 while Section 2 troupes will battle it out against each other on January 13 and 27. DESCRIPTION:Exit/Exist’s final bow to South African stages \nIn honour of his 50th birthday on 16 October\, iconic South African dance legend\, Gregory Vuyani Maqoma\, revisits his critically acclaimed\, Exit/Exist\, at the Pam Golding Theatre at The Baxter\, for three performances only\, from 5 to 7 October 2023 at 7.30pm. \nThis production\, that has been dear to his career over the years\, is his second last performance in South Africa\, as Maqoma retires from dancing during this year. Through his award-winning storytelling\, he has introduced the world to characters and storylines that have captured the zeitgeist and remain resonant to this day and widely become known as a catalyst for breaking new ground\, as well as\, changing and elevating the arts landscape. \nThis short run at The Baxter follows the sensitive\, solo work’s hugely successful seasons at The Market Theatre and the  National Arts Festival earlier this year. The overwhelming response from audiences and media is testament that Exit/Exist\, directed by James Ngcobo\, still resonates in South Africa today\, as the country continues to weave through the necessary discourse of land\, as a nation. It reflects and explores the memory of Maqoma’s distant ancestor\, Chief Jongumsobomvu Maqoma one of the most renowned Xhosa leaders\, who was born in 1798\, arrested when he ordered the English colonisers to liberate Xhosa land and died in Robben Island in 1873.\n\nHe embodies this forgotten history in a transformational and poignant performance that fuses storytelling with his own\, unparalleled contemporary dance vocabulary and spirited live music. Through his signature integration of traditional and contemporary dance\, he invites audiences to reflect on who they are\, where they come from\, and how all of these facets\, past and present\, inform their personal and collective identities today. \nThe core of this piece is memory; rephrasing the notion of existence and the notion of simply existing\,in order to exist. This production takes a moment to pause; to look back; to rewind the tape to the days when the tapestry of South Africa was about the collision of biographies. A deliberate choice of less exposition and a bigger emphasis on how we use the visual element to tell this tale\, while underpinning the musicality\, that evokes the spirit of the time.\n \n“The return of Exit/Exist to the South African audience is not only befitting to the extraordinary journey I have taken so far\, but marks 150 years since the passing of my ancestor\, Chief Maqoma\,” says Gregory. “The issue of land\, that is emphasised in the work\, is a trail of human misery and degradation\, loss and hope.” \nFour exceptional vocalists\, comprising TobelaMpela\, Sizwe Nhlapo\, Lubabalo Velebayi and Sipho Mhlanga along with world-fusion guitarist Giuliano Modarelli\, join Maqoma live on stage to perform the lush music score\, composed by Simphiwe Dana\, under the musical direction of Happy Motha. As supporting characters in the narrative\, the entire cast is interwoven into his vibrantly kinetic world\, creating rich visual scenes which punctuate his abstract exploration of race and political power\, cultural tradition and personal legacy. \nAs he retires from dancing\, Maqoma believes his legacy is one of telling groundbreaking stories as a way of social commentary contributing to South Africa’s narrative and proudly the world over. It has been fifty years of firsts\, fifty years of learning\, fifty years of anguish and frustration\, but most importantly\, it has been fifty years of Gregory Vuyani Maqoma being alive. It is almost like going ‘full circle’. \nFirst Nation women need to be celebrated\, need to be fed truthful knowledge\, need to be nurtured\, and empowered\, and need to be encouraged and motivated. This is what this event is about in summary\, which is the start of its annual occurrence. \nTwo Princesses from different tribes are part of the Speakers. One very knowledgeable\, trustworthy\, sincere consultant in all matters First Nation will be a Speaker. \nThe First Nation Peoples of Southern Africa have gone full circle\, and the time has come for them to be heard. This event is taking place via the FPIUN NPO\, a new structure that focuses on all matters First Nation\, such as standard of living\, education\, employment\, economic development\, spirituality\, and restoration. \nThis is its first event and on this level of importance.
