SUMMARY:Livus’umoya: The Lady Day Big Band Album Launch Concert
DESCRIPTION:The Lady Day Big Band ready to awe South African audiences with debut album launch this February \nSouth Africa’s first all-women professional big band is set to launch their debut album at Cape Town’s Star Theatre next month. \nThe Lady Day Big Band (LDBB) was founded in 2018 as a legacy project aimed at showcasing the talents of professional female musicians while fostering new talent. \nAfter perfecting their sound\, they now invite audiences to join them and their special guests as they celebrate the release of their debut album\, “Livus’umoya” on Friday 23 February 2024.\n \nGuests to their launch will be able to watch them live up to the legacy of the illustrious Billy “Lady Day” Holiday\, one of the most unforgettable pioneers of 20th century Jazz. \n“It is an exciting time to spearhead a female-led project like this\, in an industry and genre that is still male-dominated. Over the last six years we have seen how this initiative has raised the visibility of women musicians\, and our members have benefited from this greatly. Many of our players have been booked to play in all kinds of projects and have grown in skill and confidence as a direct result of their involvement and performances with the band\,” says Amanda Tiffin\, one of the founding members. \nTiffin spearheads the band with fellow musos and creators of the group: Lana Crowster and Kelly Bell. \nThe band incorporates contemporary styles with traditional big band sounds\, to give audiences an explosive experience of exciting big band music.\n \n“Having my own big band had always been a dream to me\, and after many years in the industry it was important to me to create a space\, not only where women would feel physically safe but also where they felt comfortable to play their instrument\, and explore their musicality and creativity through composition and arrangement\, \n“Recording an album went hand-in-hand with that purpose. I knew it would create an opportunity for some of our players to record in a professional studio for the first time in their careers\, for others\, it would give the opportunity to showcase their songwriting\, composition and arrangement skills. Through the process of creating the album\, we have all cultivated confidence in our skills as musicians\,” said Crowster\, who is currently residing in New York City. \n“Learning\, growing and evolving is in our credo\, and the album was a perfect vehicle to tick all those boxes. In addition\, our incredible performances since our debut in 2018 has always left our audiences wanting more\, and now they’ll be able to enjoy our music wherever they are in the world\,” she added \nTiffin describes the launch album as a collection of all South African music\, across a few genres\, but sitting mainly in the South African Jazz arena. \n“We chose to feature an all-South African repertoire as we are passionate about showcasing South African works. Six out of the nine compositions have been penned by members of the LDBB\, and the other three tracks are big band re-imaginings of some South African classics.” \nThe album features a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks\, with band leader and founder\, Lana Crowster lending her voice to a number of pieces\, including a heart-wrenching performance of Karen Zoid and Francois Van Cokes’ “Toe Vind Ek Jou”. \nThe album also features incredible collaborations. \n“Gloria Bosman was kind enough to lend us her powerhouse vocal skills while she was living and studying in Cape Town in 2021\, on an epic rendition of Busi Mhlongo’s Yehlisan’umoya. This was sadly to be one of her last studio recordings. We will forever be humbled and grateful that we got to include her on our album\,” said Tiffin. \nThe band hopes to convey encouraging and uplifting messages through their album. \n“Ayo Ayo (lyrics by Phathiswa Magangane) conveys an uplifting message of hope and encouragement\, to remain open hearted\, and to embrace the future. We used a lyric from this song as the title for our album\, as it embodies the overall theme and ethos of the LDBB. To awaken the spirit\,” said Tiffin. \n“Elegy for the Forgotten Child was written as a response to the shocking epidemic of child murders that happened and sadly continues to happen in the Western Cape. \n“It is a lament for the children whose names appear in the press for a fleeting moment\, a news cycle\, and are then forgotten\, while the violence continues\, often unacknowledged. It Is a call to remember their names. The song is written using the voices of three women\, three mothers who have each lost a child\, and the lyrics are written in Afrikaans\, English by Quanita Adams and Xhosa by Nomfundo Xaluva-Dyantyis\,” said Tiffin. \n“Globally\, African creativity is trending and will continue to do so\, as the world’s attention brings us into centre focus. I want LDBB to be represented on global stages at festivals and conferences as well as collaborate with women musicians in other territories\,” said Crowster. \n“In addition\, we will be working towards creating visibility on the continent too – hosting free workshops for young musicians all over the continent\, the same way we have been doing in Cape Town. It has been proven that representation matters. The more kids see women playing instruments and working together\, the more they’d aspire to achieve their musical goals while creating community and support in their own communities.” \nThe February 23 event will see the full 20-piece Lady Day Big Band performing selected songs from the album\, as well as some of their favourite South African and global tunes\, with a LDBB twist. \nThe evening features Lynelle Kenned as guest vocalist and co-MC for the evening along with a selection of other surprise guests. \nTickets are R175 each and are available via Quicket.co.za for ticketing and further information.\n \nEvent details:\nLivus’umoya: The Lady Day Big Band Album Launch Concert\nVenue: Homecoming Centre\, Star Theatre\, Buitenkant Street\, District Six\, Cape Town\, Western Cape\, South Africa\nDates: Friday 23 February 2024\nTicket Price: R175\nShow Time: 8pm\nBookings: Available via Quicket (Quicket.co.za)\nDirect booking link: https://www.quicket.co.za/events/245056-livusumoya-the-lady-day-big-band-album-launch-concert/#/ \nSocial Media Details:\nFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/theladydaybigband/\nInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/theladydaybigband\nYouTube: https://youtu.be/wOzvfhdnW1c \nAbout the band:\nThe Lady Day Big Band is South Africa’s first all-women professional big band\, founded by the dynamic trio of Lana Crowster\, Amanda Tiffin and Kelly Bell. The full band is 20-musicians strong\, and the Little Big Band version is a more compact 11-piece ensemble. \nFounded in 2018 with the aim of fostering social unity and upliftment through music\, and in part as a response to the #MeToo movement to create safe spaces for women\, the Lady Day Big Band received a thunderous standing ovation after their debut performance and were immediately snapped up for performances at multiple festivals.

SUMMARY:The Hilton Schilder Trio
DESCRIPTION:The Hilton Schilder Trio performs on Sunday 5th November at 3pm at Christ Church Constantia. Respected veteran Cape Jazz pianist Hilton Schilder\, his cousin Eldred (double bass) and Carlo Fabe (drums) will present a concert of their original compositions\, influenced by our city’s jazz community.\n \nHilton Schilder was born in Lotus River\, Cape Town and grew up in a musical family (his father was the jazz pianist and band leader Tony Schilder). He began playing early in bands in the Kaapse Klopse. In the 1980s he founded The Genuines with Mac McKenzie\, who specialized in the Goema music of the Western Cape province. Goema is a Cape Jazz style\, though more inspired by the Coon troops that march annually on Tweede Nuwe Jaar. He led African Dream and Iconoclast (with Victor Ntoni and Vusi Khumalo). Robbie Jansen invited him to join the band Sons of Table Mountain. He also led his own groups\, with whom he also performed at the Cape Town International Jazz Festival\, and toured with Johannes Enders. His first album\, No Turning Back (2003)\, was nominated in the “Best Contemporary Jazz Album” category at the South African Music Awards (SAMA). He co-founded the duo RockArt with Alex van Heerden\, which moved in the direction of acoustic and electronic minimal jazz. He has worked with Mac McKenzie\, Namakwa\, The District Six Band\, and The Goema Captains of Cape Town. In 2008 he was Artist in Residence at the Bird’s Eye Jazz Club in Basel. \nWatch his Grassy Park Requiem of 2010\nHilton Schilder Group live in Cape Town – YouTube \nA blog including an extensive interview\nHilton Schilder: prince of music\, steeped in jazz royalty | MUSIC LEGENDS OF CAPE TOWN (warrenludskimusicscene.com) \nTickets to the concert are R150 (seating unreserved) and can be bought online from Quicket using the link below or by calling Anne on 082 218 0100. \nBook tickets for The Hilton Schilder Trio (quicket.co.za) \nBorn on 11 July 1959 at his family home on Princess Street in Harfield Village\, bassist Eldred Schilder grew up amongst several families of musicians\, all who have carried the legendary Schilder name. He learned easily from this family DNA to play a Cape form of jazz from the traditional goema (klopse) beat heard all around him. \nAs the apartheid government dislocated homes\, Eldred’s family was thrown out of Harfield Village and into a Cape Flats community of Newfields where he continued to grow his musical ear. His musician father\, pianist Richard Schilder\, performed in various popular bands that emerged in the Cape Flats of Cape Town. Richard –  also a goldsmith – taught young Eldred songs on the piano\, and allowed other senior Schilder family members to groom him\, in particular Uncle Philip who also played bass and other instruments. Jazz pianists Tony Schilder and Chris Schilder left a profound mark on Eldred’s development. \nEldred launched his own CD – entitled ‘Tenziah’ (combining the names of daughters Tenielle and Keziah) – early this year. Eldred has recorded extensively with the late guitarist Errol Dyers\, his cousin multi-instrumentalist Hilton Schilder\, and with other popular bands around Cape Town\, including Manouche. \nDrummer Carlo Fabe has appeared in a variety of studio and live settings\, performing and/or recording with artists such as The Cape Jazz Ensemble\, Thandi Klaasen\, Ezra Ngcukana\, Sathima Sea Benjamin\, Sylvia Mdunyelwa\, Errol Dyers\, Robbie Jansen\, Tete Mbambisa’s Big Sound\, George Werner\, Peter Ndlala\, Hilton Schilder\, Steve Newman\, Ernerstine Deane\, Derrick Schippers\, Mark Goliath\, Erika Lundi and the Solms-Delta Music Trust Ensemble’s to name just a few. To date\, he recently recorded the Hilton Schilder Goema Club Album – 2021\, toured the USA with the hit musical\,“Makeba”\, (which paid tribute to the late great Miriam Makeba)\, performed at the 2016 Cape Town International Jazz Festival with Tete Mbambisa’s Big Sound\, 2013 Cape Town International Jazz Festival with Errol Dyers and the Cape Jazz Ensemble\, 2010 Grahamstown National Arts Festival with Robbie Jansen and the Cape Jazz Spectacular\, Blue Note Jazz Festival in Paris in 2009 with Hilton Schilder\, Cape Town International Jazz Festival in 2007 with the late Ezra Ngcukana. During January 2012\, He recorded the Bamboesbos CD (Cape folk style) with the Delta Trust Ensemble\, and in December 2007\, Carlo was part of the live recording\, “Summer in Cape Town”\, which comprised many of Cape Town’s top musicians. \nIn the field of education\, Carlo is very active. At present\, he is teaching at the Institute for Music and Indigenous Arts Development (IMAD) and his own Private Drum Practice. Previous music institutions he taught at include; Solms-Delta’s Music van de Caab heritage program\, Liron Music Academy\, Oakfields College\, Turfjamp\, Hout Bay Music Academy\, and the Jazz Workshop. As time permits\, he gives clinics\, seminars\, and workshops at various institutions and offers private master classes. \nCarlo is currently working on his solo recording and an instructional DVD and book focusing on traditional Cape folk rhythms as applied to the drum-set. Carlo continues to perform\, teach\, and record nationally and internationally. He is currently performing with his own band “CF Groove Express”\, featuring many of Cape Town’s legends as well as up-and-coming fresh talent from the Cape Flats’ region\, the Steve Newman Trio\, The Hilton Schilder Goema Club\, Peter Ndlala’s Unit5 and sessions in between.
