A Miriam Makeba Tribute – Hassan’adas at Drumstruck

Celebrate the music and legacy of Mama Africa with Hassan’adas, poetry, storytelling and an open jam at Silvermist in Constantia.
As Heritage Month approaches, WOMAD South Africa and Drumstruck come together for a special evening celebrating one of South Africa’s most influential musical voices, Miriam Makeba.
A Miriam Makeba Tribute – Hassan’adas takes place on Wednesday, 16 September 2026 at Drumstruck at Silvermist Organic Wine Estate in Constantia.
Known around the world as Mama Africa, Miriam Makeba used her remarkable voice and music to connect South African stories with audiences across the globe. This special tribute reflects on her extraordinary contribution to South African and international music while celebrating the enduring power of her legacy.
The evening features a live performance by Hassan’adas, the Cape Town-based Afro-Latin fusion project led by veteran percussionist, musician, songwriter, arranger and producer John Hassan.
The programme will also include poetry and storytelling, exploring themes of heritage, identity and the stories carried between generations. The evening then opens up into an open jam led by Drumstruck, bringing musicians and audiences together through rhythm and participation.
Food and drinks will be available as part of the wider experience, creating a relaxed setting for an evening of music, conversation and connection.
Hassan’adas brings together African rhythms and sounds with Latin and global influences. The project was founded in Cape Town in 2010 and describes its music as a conversation between African roots and Latin grooves.
At the heart of the project is John Hassan, a highly experienced percussionist who has spent more than three decades working in the music industry. He has performed and recorded with numerous leading South African and international artists, including Miriam Makeba, Hugh Masekela, Brenda Fassie, Manu Dibango, Papa Wemba, Sibongile Khumalo, Simply Red and Jimmy Dludlu. He has also recorded as a session musician on more than 100 albums.
The event forms part of WOMAD South Africa’s September programme, which brings together music, arts, cultural exchange and community across Cape Town during Heritage Month.
Come and celebrate Mama Africa, the music she shared with the world, and the stories that continue to carry her legacy forward.
