On Africa Day, a week before elections, SboNdaba Dance premiers at Artscape their most ambitious production to date:
! ke e: /xarra //ke, Diverse People Unite,
24 May @ 19h00 and 25 May @15h00 and 19h00
SboNdaba Dance’s award- winning choreographer, Sbonakaliso Ndaba, is a master storyteller. In this production, her reflections bring the audience up close and face to face with South Africa’s journey to the 1994 elections. Her powerful vision highlights the success stories, the incredible depth of our diversity and the huge challenges that still confront us after 30 years of Democracy.
Together with the highly acclaimed SboNdaba dancers, the large cast includes Marlin Zoutman who is a member of New World Dance Theatre, Andile Vellum, Mpotseng Shupping, Yaseen Manuel – Unmute Dance Theatre, Keenun Wales, Nathaniel Jacob, Samwill Deez – Rebirth Dance Company, Monwabisi Bence – Imbewu Dance Collective and independent dancer Lewellyn Afrika.
Joining them is Vicky Sampson, the magical voice behind Afrikan Dream, the song that inspired a nation, and celebrated African indigenous musicians Thabisa Dinga, Zinziswa Nogavu and Lutho Mzongwana.
Sbo Ndaba says: “There is a reason why we are different. This production will enhance the power of our diversity through Songs, African Contemporary Dance and Storytelling, with the backing of local musicians and the beautiful sounds of indigenous instruments. As South African artists we must unite, take pride in our uniqueness, inspire one another and believe in the magic of our dreams.”
“Development of different voices and the celebration of diversity are two key elements of Artscape’s vision states Marlene le Roux, CEO of Artscape. “This production reflects all that is triumphant in this field. Giving a platform and a voice to parts of our 30-year Democracy history that previously have been dormant is vital to continue to grow who we are as South Africans and Africans. This is the kind of production that does precisely that.”
