What to expect
• Starting at 10am with a donut making session with aunty Sieda in her family home of almost 40 years in the suburb of Bridgetown, Athlone in Cape Town.
• she will share stories of her family heritage and why she started making the donuts and her special way of how to make it
• Once going through the making process until it’s ready to be eaten you will get to taste some of it with her secret recipe special tea
• At the end of the experience you will get some to take with as either “padkos” or to enjoy during tea time after your days activities at your accommodation
*padkos – South African Afrikaans word for street food you take with on a road trip no matter how short or long
About your host
Rashieda Ockards is that one caring community aunty that everyone greets and tends to pop in at, she is always giving something to nibble on and affectionately known by family, friends, and locals as Aunty Sieda. She has particularly become known for her donuts [a lighter less spicier version of the popular Cape Town Koesister] and you can get to experience her making it and try your hand at it too. Then get your teeth sunk into these delicious melt in your mouth morsels of doughy goodness, covered in a sugary syrup and sprinkled with desiccated coconut. You will know why she ends up making thousands each month.
Brent Thomas and his family have carried on some of their traditional way of life by living off and in nature. As a family they have regular walks in the mountain and on the beach and within season and with their permits they would forage and collect what they need as part of their lifestyle. Passed on through the generations of the indigenous people as their forefathers, you get to have a taste and live a bit in the past.
