Kai Aios! This is Khoi for “Thank you!”
I am a Nama–Khoi descendant and so proud of my heritage.
Local inhabitants were no “savages”, as portrayed by the invaders of old. They defended their ancestral lands, their families and their dignity.
My grandmothers both hailed from Namaqualand.
My paternal grandma, survived both wars and the pain of humiliation during Apartheid but a sweeter and more kind person, I have rarely met. She pioneered her way to uplift a generation and beyond.
Let us dance through the streets of Cape Town on the soles of our shoes, while I paint a picture for you. Yes! Presenting the beautiful views of the Hoerikwaggo/Table Mountain, hiding in her shadow both the anguish of persecution and the sweet delight of emancipation!
See, just like my forebears, I have a passion for the painting stuff! So let’s experience the buzzing local art scene, both outside as well as within. Let us have a view of how Indigenous peoples used herbal medicines to effectively treat various ailments, before being introduced to Western medication. Smell the sweetness of the Protea sugarbush and hear of its healing properties.
We may also have a cookie and a chat at a local eatery. Whether you are gluten free, vegetarian or vegan, Cape Town caters for you all. Even if your desire is to relish some traditional African Cuisine, hey – the skies the limit!
Prospective Culture Vultures need to know that, nowhere on this planet, is there as a unique experience than going on a walking tour, as with the Cape Town Footsteps Indigenous Walking Tour
We have our problems like any other city globally but let it be said that, despite this, Cape Town is the friendliest – AND most prettiest city in the universe. Now that’s official!
Feel free to contact me to discuss what exactly tickles your fancy and we may happily explore!
Please be prepared to wield our local “traditional weapons” named a sense of humour, open mind and a sincere smile. See, here at I Am Cape Town, we have this obsession regarding #diversity and #inclusivity which we don’t see as buzzwords but a call to action!
Even if you see yourself as challenged in any way and a bit shy, please do not be side-lined. Remember that with challenges come great opportunities – an opportunity for you to shine!
Oh, my name’s Willy – your friendly and helpful Indigenous Individual.
